Slack Unveils New Features to Compete with Microsoft Teams

At the Spec 2019 conference, the company revealed upcoming features that are directed at making the app more discoverable and lowering down the need to exit Slack for a number of tasks.

The home screen has been refurbished and is amongst the new features. It allows devs to provide more functions for particular applications. For example, Slack will now be able to show data concerning the user’s work, such as forthcoming events, etc. the users will be able to access different stuff straight from the home screen.

For instance, the Calendar application by Google is capable of displaying the user schedule for a particular date. Users will be able to reply to any requests or take part in video calls easily.

App Actions Menu

For customization, devs can use the Block Kit UI framework that was released a year ago. The company has also increased the abilities of the actions feature. Now, it can be accessed from different segments of the software. Actions were released a year ago, and it allows users to interact with applications by going to the context menu placed next to Slack messages.

To access the App action menu, one has to click on the dedicated icon located in the sidebar. Now, users will be able to pin actions as well. Slack Quick Switcher will enable users to browse app actions using Search.

Developers will now be able to customize app windows. These windows provide a new way of adding detailed info in the apps or displays.

Granular Permissions

For encouraging more companies to use 3rd party integrations, the company has rolled out granular permissions. These permit developers to request just the required details for an application to work.

Earlier, the developers had to go through bot tokens, which needed a complete set of permissions. This could have deterred some concerned security administrators from making use of a 3rd party application.

Here is a quick summary of the newly announced Slack features.

  • A landing screen in which users will be able to view all their available Slack apps.
  • Brand-new home page inside the apps. This will enable the users to see and interact with the apps directly via Slack.
  • Newly added windows to aid in launching and interacting with applications directly.
  • Actions feature than can be accessed at any place in the app, as well as the search. this will enable the users to access application integrations while working on Slack.
